Yoga for children: asking them to lead empowers them

cropped-6944_277503429061387_1724037547_n.jpg

I think of the children and how annoyed they must feel all day long receiving statements of what to do, what not to do and how to do everything, it must be hard to grow up! I have forgotten and I am now remembering through them. In some cases it can be easily noticed in their behavior that they are tired of it too. When I saw this pattern in my Kundalini Yoga classes, expressed through students boycotting the class with bathroom breaks, endless questions, teacher mocking etc etc, I decided to switch places and ask the children to lead, supporting them along the way. Immediately I noticed that giving them the space, empowers them and calms them down, they feel recognized and valued. I enjoy to see the switch in them, their tone of voice, their posture and their language when they are teaching. It is a seed that it is planted in them, full of potential to develop a beautiful, confident and graceful human being. One class at the time.

Kids teach me so much when I teach them Kundalini Yoga.

Argentinean and starting to dance tango in New York?

Tango in Union Square, New York

Little did I know that my last visit to Buenos Aires would lead me to start dancing tango in New York. And even less did I know that this trip would be the one that would answer my question about how to spend more time there, close to my family and friends, in my birthplace, which had called my heart during my last visit in 2011. First let me tell you some details about how I got here.  I have lived in New York since 1999 and in 2009 I traveled India for  six months. This deep and far away  inward and outward journey transformed my life completely. Yoga was a big part of my life even before then. I have always wanted to got to India and I didn’t really know I was going there. I was originally hired with a three year contract as the head of Fashion department at Academy of Design, in Sri Lanka, but I left. Only once I spent two weeks in Sri Lanka I came to the conclusion that I would had to deviate my spiritual path for this job to later come back to the path where I left it, very difficult decision to make, but I quit. At the stage  I was at in my spiritual path back then, I was not strong enough to withstand peoples criticism about the lifestyle choices and eating habits I had.

And anyways, for whom was I there? For my self, my higher self or for the image that this prestigious position would gain me in the world?

I had closed shop in New York and didn’t really have any reason to come back. India popped up in my head, but where would I start the trip without prior planning or preparation? I traveled there anyways, and had the most amazing trip of my life. I connected with the land to such an extent that I didn’t want to leave when my six month visa expired. Smriti Chackravarti , the beautiful yogini and teacher I studied Yoga and Pranayama with in Varanasi sent me back.

Smrit and I in Bodh Gaya, India

Smrit and I in Bodh Gaya, India

She said it was time to depart India, otherwise I would never leave. Smriti sent me back to absorb the teachings I had received, and asked me to share them with people in my own way. My heart felt so big and warm from this experience that I had the urge to share it with the whole world in a creative way. I focused on sharing the wisdom with children. If only I could have had this wisdom accessible to me on a daily basis  as I was growing up, what a fortunate blessing for my life, even if not recognized consciously at that time. That is how I was inspired to write Learn Play Practice, a Yoga book for children, their parents and teachers to explore the techniques of Yoga in a safe, fun and artistic way.

Yoga book for Children cover

It was a great collaboration with my friend and Yoga teacher Beth Maderal, my Yoga Smriti Chakravarti and Girls Public Prep, the school where she developed a Yoga program for the core curriculum.  Spanish, English and German editions of the book are available online and we offer workshops in schools and studios.

Upon my return from India my values and priorities had change drastically and during my visit to Argentina in 2011 something unexpected happened. For the first time in 13 years I felt my heart and my land vibrating together. My land called me to come back, spend time with my family, share the wisdom with my people and reconnect with my roots on a deeper level. But HOW? No idea, really no-idea. The question was out there tingling in my auric field, tapping in my head once in a while with no answer for it. My antennas were up, internal communications connected to my energetic ears and eye. The answer had to appear around me at some point, I hoped. In the meantime I decided to stay in New York and build my base there. It took me 18 months to completely, physically and spiritually arrive from India, and a total of two and a half years to settle back in New York. For the first year I missed that land and my teacher so much, I would sob only from reading Indian biographies or stories. I was in pain and confused for some time, but something was clear: I had the mission to share the wisdom I had acquired in India in my own way. And that has been my focus and commitment while in New York, until the answer I was looking for came to me last June when I was in Argentina.

Before I continue revealing the story I want to make you aware of the word that inspires me the most these days: INTEGRATION.  After presented with the answer to my question: How to spend more time in Argentina? I came to decode the fact that there is a maturity point in our spiritual path when it is the right time to integrate  insights from within into our outside realities on a deeper level. Almost like a mirror: going from deep within to deep without.

Yes I found the way , or better said it found us, and as a result of it I am moving to Buenos Aires February 5th. Upps, my flight to Puerto Rico is about to land and I have to turn off the computer for now. I will carry on later, no pun intended.

For now enjoy this meditation which has helped me connect with the flux of my heart and once connected to it the answers I am looking for become more lucid. ENJOY!

SOUL TECH: Sophisticated shift happening

by Patricia Buraschi

Sister reflection of WORLD TECH by Nethunting (Gema Requena)

“We always do the best we can by the light we have to see by.”
― Julia Cameron

by Belen Requena Moreno

The inward change that I see happening all over is touching many levels of society such as: individuals, communities, businesses, corporations and governments. It is an organic and sophisticated shift taking place at a time in which we are called to connect to our selves, our core on a deeper level. I see this shift or evolution sometimes being activating voluntarily by people and sometimes imposed by nature or the law of physics when it is needed but not activated. And one way or another the process involves becoming lighter, first on a material, physical level to then continue on a energetic, mind and soul level. The main purpose, to connect with our higher self, our light, our love, the person that we are without all the layers, armor, crusts that we have accumulated over time due to our fears. But why would I want to connect to my Self many might ask themselves? and for what reason ? you might ask yourself.

A few answers I discovered over time through my Yoga and meditation practice. You can add your own too. These apply to communities, businesses, corporations and governments as well as individuals. Terms may vary to relate accordingly.

  • to identify what  and who resonates with you

  • to feel confident about yourself

  • to find your own way to express your creativity

  • to identify the connecting factor of the different things you do

  • to make evolving connections with people, places and spaces

At first this might seem a hippy, esoteric conversation. Although if you observe around you with this question in mind you will start to notice that this evolving inward shift takes different shapes depending on the environment it is working on, in this way it can cause a positive impact on the people involved. With limited budgets, massive layoffs, lack of resources for trainings and the impact that these have from individual level to government level people seem to start valuing  their workforce, network of people and own skills more than before,  making better quality choices in a more focused manner to attain better results. Sometimes having limitations as the ones above can be very refreshing for our productive and creative process.

Creativity is a major factor  playing in this shift and it can lead into waves of  liberation and discovery into our lives, businesses, communities and governments. A relaxed mind is key in order to see the connections we wouldn’t normally see and let this energy flow in our body, and for that I will share a meditation with you after this article. We are also used to follow and obey rules and formats since childhood, but are we given the space to connect to ourselves and develop our intuition? Logan LaPLante was lucky he got the space and he is doing it on a daily basis, he is 13 years old. I watched his video and wanted to share it with you.

As an artist myself I approach this limitation technique and collaboration as the basis of my work. The materials I used are 90% recycled or donated to me and when I start developing a concept I go into my studio and look at what I have. I went through a conventional BA Fashion Design program at FIT, where I was trained to work in the Fashion Industry. My main focus with my art work, now that I remembered I am an artist after going to Nick Cave’s For Now exhibition

at Mary Boone Gallery in New York, is to tell stories through costumes and characters that I develop based on my intuition and reflection of other people, from experiences I have during my Yoga practice and from my everyday insights.

Some projects I am working on at the present time, have been traced from childhood memories, or have been developing for years in my mind like Monika Grev.

Monik Grev by Patricia Buraschi. Photo: Hanna Agar

Monik Grev by Patricia Buraschi. Photo: Hanna Agar

One of the aspects I like the most in the whole process is when I collaborate with Hanna Agar, an amazing photographer and retoucher from Wisconsin who has made her home in Brooklyn. There is nothing more valuable to my creative process right now, as when I am able to share an idea and brainstorm with other artists, thinkers and innovators about their expertise and how they can contribute to the project. I try not to limit myself to fashion to express what I need to share. What I love about it and works for me but it is its malleability to combine very different materials into a 3D form that becomes alive when worn.

By going all over the place with this article today I want to share with you that new opportunities, new trends, new profiles, new careers are at the reach of your hands and available right now. It only takes practice to get comfortable with the idea that you are an endless source of valuable  gifts and another mountain of practice to find your own way to share it with the world!

Yoga and meditation can help a lot, my main goal when sharing this techniques is to hope they become as valuable to you as they did for me overtime 🙂 Yes overtime, with lots of practice.

Below I am sharing a meditation to rest your mind from Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan

Meditation to Rest Your Mind

Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®

Lecture July 16, 1990

Posture: Comfortable Meditative Posture

Mudra: Rest your hands in your lap, right hand resting in the left. The right thumb rests on top of the left.

Eyes: Tip of the Nose, also called Trikuti Drishti

Mantra: Har Singh Nar Singh Neel Narayan.

Chant with the tip of

the tongue and the upper palate.

Har singh nar singh neel naaraayan,

guroo sikh guroo singh har har gayan,

whaa‐hay guroo whaa‐hay guroo, har har dhiayan, saakhat nindak

dusht mathaayan

God the Protector takes care of the universe.

Those who live in God’s consciousness and power, chant Har Har. Meditate

on Wahe Guru and live in that ecstasy.

Those who vibrate God’s Name and relate to God,

all karmas are cleared.

To end: Inhale deep, exhale; inhale deep again, suspend the breath, exhale. Inhale again, hold the breath and pull tight, with a powerful breath, let it go.

Time: 11 minutes

Comments: Har means God, Singh means lion. Narsingh means male lion. “Harsingh, Narsingh Neel Narayan.” Neel you all know is blue; Narayan means spotless. Mind cannot be arrested; the warrants and the handcuffs of the mind are when you put your eyes at the tip of the nose. The mind, poor thing, becomes useless, you know that? When the optical nerve sits, fixed, the mind cannot move.

“There’s nothing which can be more precious in you than your own relationship with your own consciousness.” by Yogi Bhajan

Photo: Alina Schwarcz

I want to make a brief pause before I keep sharing more Kundalini Yoga techniques, to introduce you how to tune in before you start your Kundalini Yoga and meditation practice. Yogi Bhajan was a very special Master in a way that he never initiated students, he  always said came to the United States to create teachers and not students.  With enormous compassion and commitment he held the space and share the tools and techniques for transformation to occur in people’s lives. And with this in mind I am sharing this information with all of you today. We tune in to connect with the wisdom of the teachings, not a particular person or teacher, but the root where these teachings are coming from. The teachers that we encounter or become serve as a vessel to share this wisdom. To tune in we use the Adi Mantra: Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo, by chanting it we open a safe space to practice.

My first Kundalini Yoga book was Kundalini Yoga: Guidelines for Sadhana ( Daily practice)

and it is from it that I am sharing the meaning of the Adi Mantra.

Ong is the infinite creative energy in motion and manifestation

Namo has the same root as the word Namaste which means reverent greetings. It implies bowing down.

Together Ong Namo means “ I call on the creative infinite consciousness”, opening yourself to the universal consciousness that guides all action.

Guru is the teacher or the embodiment of the wisdom that on is seeking. Dev means divine or of God, in a non-earthly, transparent sense. Namo closing the mantra, reaffirms the humble reverence of the devotee. Taken together Guru Dev Namo means “I call on the divine wisdom”, whereby you bow before your higher self to guide you in using the knowledge and energy given by the cosmic self.

Ong Namo Gurudev Namo

“ I call on the creative infinite consciousness, I call on the divine wisdom”

How to tune in:

  • Sit in a comfortable position with your spine straight. If your hips are tight and your knees hurt, sit on a few folded blankets or a sturdy cushion to elevate your hips, this will release the tension from your knees.

  • Close your eyes focus in between your eyebrows and focus on your breath, take 3-5 deep inhales and exhales.

  • Bring your hands together and place your thumbs in the middle of your chest. Try to feel your heartbeat with your thumbs.

  • Inhale deeply, exhale.

  • Take one full inhale and chant Ong Namo.

  • Take one half inhale and chante Guru Dev Namo.

  • Repeat the chanting 2 more times.

  • Inhale deeply and hold your breath for 5 seconds, exhale.

Now you are ready to start your Kundalini Yoga practice.

Enjoy!

P.S: If you are interested in finding more about this practice this book is a great basic tool, it explains you all about group Sadhana, its effects, why we want to practice during amrit vela (early hours of the morning) and it has great Kriyas and meditations as well. It’s worth while getting a copy!

“Now our lives are at a crossroads. On one side we are part of the material..and on the other side we are looking to the spiritual side of ourselves. Question is, do you go with today’s trends or do you adopt your own way of life and come out of it and be so? That is what this time demands. Find the truth, become the master of your energy and be you.”

Over and over life keeps pointing me to the fact how we are all intertwined  at an molecular level and if  we are lucky we will have many chances to perceive the connection very tangibly. A very recent example in my life has brought to my attention the simple fact that meditation is available for all kinds of people, and all kinds of people are practicing it all over the world.  This might seem like an obvious statement, but even I find myself surprised at this fact.

I was recently honored to host David, a very dear person to me,   visiting New York for the first time.  David is a singer and tanguero, Yoga and meditation were not part of his conscious reality before this trip happened. I showed him my lifestyle, brought him to my friends, the Yoga studio where I teach (Hari NYC), we went to Sadhana for Guru Ram Das birthday with Kirtan led by Satrkirin Kaur Khalsa and I introduced him to my mentors and teachers.

As he was planning the visit he found out he has family here too, so we went to visit Tío Amado and Norma in Queens. During dinner, Tío Amado showed us the beautiful sculptures he carves out of thick branches he find on the street. Native American faces, eagles, Buddha like hair do’s….he told me he just “sees” these shapes in them….hhmm!Beautiful. I understand his sculptures as a dialogue his soul is having with his higher Self.

At one point in the evening Tío Amado leaves with David after giving him a massage to help him release this really bad shoulder pain he had for a few days.  After about half an hour, I notice it was getting late and I asked Norma to take me to them. We go to the basement where we meet them again and David comes out carrying a CD in his hand, Healing Mantras from Deva Premal. And he says: Tío Amado meditates early in

Sculptures by Tio Amado

the morning before going to work. I look at him and I say: Of course he meditates! I started laughing remembering the sculptures . This is when I started realizing the magic that was happening in front of David’s eyes. That meditation time is when Tío Amado allows to be guided by his own heart beat, by his souls spark and vibration. And the sculptures to me are the material manifestation of this process in his life.

I love to be a spectator of this opening doors for David, constantly getting very tangible conversations or situations about meditation and how it benefits peoples lives since he arrived in NY, and from people he loves and strangers alike once he went back to Buenos Aires. Like the person who brought a mandala book to be printed by his print shop, or the Kundalini Yogini that brought him a Yoga manual to reproduce it 50 times, or the friend that told him he also meditates in the morning in his home’s backyard, or the tenant that arrived from Germany who is a Yoga teacher…and so on.

All these hints tells me not one type of human is the “Meditator” kind.

Gema mentions in her article Public Branding 1.0 – 2.0 – 3.0 : “The public space and surroundings is one of the elements that goes along and influences with the changes of our trends”  I strongly believe these hints and gifts the universe places in front of our lives, enacted by other people that cross our daily life could be a way our higher Selves communicates what is best for us or to point where we need to pay more attention to keep evolving.

In her article Gema also says: “Interaction with the surroundings and the immediate on the go will be two qualities that go along with this trend called MIMMI” MIMMI has the intention to connect Minneapolis with its community participation on a physical and emotional level”

In my focus of observing and sharing about our Soul and Higher self I take this quote inside our bodies and decipher it for you in this way: Through meditation and continued practice of awareness as we go about our day, we will be able to start hearing the voice of our Soul and our intuition guiding us.  In my own experience their job is to guide us to live to our highest potential this time around, from wherever we are standing at any given time it speaks to us.

I keep reminding myself: Give yourself a chance today. Give the others the space to change.

This topic comes in handy  to share a Kundalini Yoga meditation called Long Ek Ong Kar or Morning call I am doing Thursdays at Hari NYC until November 21st. I am also teaching it to teenagers for 11 minutes as part of their class and I am in awe of the results I have been observing in them. The one that surprised me the most is this young boy who is very active and moves out of postures a lot throughout the class. He sat and chanted Long Ek Ong Kar for 10 out of 11 minutes before he started moving around and asking how much longer he had to go to reach the end.

I like the explanation about this mantra on Hari Singh’s site, so here it is. There you will find a lot of additional information about it. I am sharing the basics of the meaning and how to practice it here. You can practice it by itself after tuning in with Adi Mantra: Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo

EK ONG KAR SAT NAM SIRI WHAHE GURU

This meditation is practiced every morning at the beginning

of the Aquarian Morning Sadhana (daily spiritual practice).

KICK OFF: SOUL TECH/WORLD TECH

These times we are living in, in which technology is getting into the breath of our souls, how do you integrate all of it in your reality?

physcial subtle bodiesAn extensive evening conversation about life, living, technology and the Soul is what started this new collaboration with Gema (Nethunting). WORLD TECH/SOUL TECH SOUL TECH: a new and  dynamic conversation to which you are invited in. WORLD TECH is directly connected with Gema’s project mission Nethunting, linked to everyday situations, trends and values that start appearing, derived from technology and social media. The other section of SOUL TECH, which I write, creates solutions that proposes ancient Yogic, holistic techniques and technologies to incorporate the WORLD TECH topic in discussion with balance and harmony  into people’s daily lives and bodies. In some cases SOUL TECH offers a comparable holistic practice in relation to the topic in discussion in WORLD TECH, to open the prism of a specific topic and observe how it can be applied differently depending our focus . I will identify these as Comparable point of view at the begginning of the article. Art expression is a big element of my life and I include it whenever possible to offer yet another side to the viewer eye, this time as in Gnocchi del 29 I invite a few artists to share a piece in relation to the topic in discussion.

The first approach that I cover is SOUL TECH  on INTERDEPENDENCE, a sister reflection from WORLD TECH article  Crowsourced cities by Nethunting.

This  WORLD TECH/SOUL TECH conversation happened during last visit of Gema  in New York, when she presented her book Una Cololhunter en Nueva York at Instituto Cervantes and I was invited to host a Pop Up Gnocchi del 29, which she used in her book to explain the crowsourcing dyanmics in New York City.

DMV in NY = Varanasi during rush hour = blisssss!

Kundalini Yoga + Meditation + Didge = YOUR SELF BLISSED OUT!

This Thursday 21st, 7-830PM at  HARI NYC

Being at the DMV today felt like the main road in Varanasi, India, during rush hours. Noisy, crowded, people getting annoyed and angry = C-R-A-A-A-Z-Y. Thankfully no honking at the DMV! At the moment  I was about to loose I remembered what I was doing there and the whole thing became as blissful as being in India even during rush hour.

For me that means soon I will have my driver license = Yesssssssss!
